Do I need a visa to enter the Netherlands?

If you are from a non-European country and you are planning to study in the Netherlands you need to apply for a MVV if you want to stay in the Netherlands longer than 3 months. If you are from Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand, South-Korea, Monaco, Vatican City or Japan you do not need to apply for an MVV. NHTV will apply for your MVV so you are able to enter the Netherlands. An MVV is an authorisation for temporary stay. An MVV is only an entrance visa for the Netherlands. You still have to apply for a residence permit once you have arrived in the Netherlands. An MVV is a sticker which will be placed in your passport by the Dutch representation in your home country and is not a tourist visa.

Do I need to apply for a residence permit?

In general, all students studying at NHTV are required to apply for a residence permit or need to register at IND in order to stay in the Netherlands legally. Exception to this rule are exchange students having a European Union nationality and staying only one semester (these students do not need to apply for a residence permit nor to register with the local authorities). EU / EER / Swiss students do not have to apply for a residence permit but they do have to register at the IND (Immigration Service of the Dutch Ministry of Justice).

How to apply for an MVV?

You can ask the International Office of NHTV to arrange an MVV for you as soon as you have been admitted to one of the NHTV’s course programmes. This short procedure through NHTV will take 6 to 8 weeks.

When can I apply for the study grant as an EU/EEA student?

There is some confusion about how this is done. You can only apply for the study grant or study financing when you are already in the Netherlands and found a job but first you need to arrange some other things before you can apply for this.

Furniture

Most rooms in the Netherlands come without any furniture. Most rooms that are offered by the International Office are fully furnished. If you find a room yourself, it will often be empty and you need to buy your own furniture. The most popular shop is Ikea and they sell nice furniture for cheap prices. Furthermore there are second hand shops in Breda that sell many nice things for very low prices. Think of a dining table for 20 euro, sofa for 25 euro, chairs for 15 euro.

Mobile phone

There are numerous phone shops where you can buy prepaid sim cards or sign a contract for a year. When you are planning to stay for a few years it is always best to make a contract with one of the providers since this will save you money and you don’t have to worry about your credits. If you choose for a contract you would have to show your residence permit (non EU students) or sticker in your passport (EU / EEA / Swiss students). The advantage of a contract is that you get a new phone and the costs per month are lower. Providers of mobile phones are for example: Telfort, T-mobile, KPN, Debitel, Vodafone. They are all represented in the centre of Breda in the Ginnekenstraat.

Pick up service from the airport or train station

Arriving for the first time in a new country might be confusing and scary. You have a lot of luggage and don’t know where to go. That’s why the international office organises, in coorperation with the international student organisation COMPASS, a  Pick Up Service. Before the start of the new semester you will get informed about this service via email and you can apply for this service.

Transport

The basic and most popular mode of transport is by bike! Every student has a bike and this is the cheapest, easiest and healthiest way to get from A to B in a city. You can get a second hand bike for already 30 euro and upon your arrival you can ask the international office or COMPASS for addresses.
