Liability and health insurance

Liability insurance

If you are to blame for an accident that injures someone or damages another person’s property, you are responsible for paying all the costs that result from the accident. You might, for example, break something, cause an accident with a car or bike, or cause damage to your rented room. The resulting claim from damages could be very expensive. You are therefore strongly urged to have a good liablity insurance. You can arrange such an insurance either in your home country or through NHTV. Note that this insurance is mandatory.

Health Insurance

As from the 1st of January 2006, a new health care insurance system was implemented in the Netherlands. All Dutch people need to take out a basic health insurance, which costs about 90 euro per month. In some situations International students are also obliged to take out the basic health care insurance.

International students younger than 30 years old

These students don’t need the compulsory Dutch basic health insurance, as long as they don’t have a paid job. These students can take out a health insurance in their own country, or they can arrange their insurance through NHTV. NHTV offers the student insurance of the company AON. This insurance costs about 40 euro per month. Besides medical expenses this insurance also covers legal aid, accidents, liablity, bagage and householdgoods and extraordinary costs. As soon as an international student starts working he needs to take out the Dutch basic health insurance.

International students with an E-statement (EU healthcard)

These students don’t need the compulsory Dutch basic health care insurance, as long as they don’t have a paid job. These students have a health insurance policy of an insurance company in their home country. We do advise these students to take out a private insurance policy without medical costs. This way the students are also insured for legal aid, accidents, liability, bagage and householdgoods and extraordinary costs. Students can also decide to take out such a private insurance without medical costs through NHTV, the premium for this insurance is about 25 euro per month. As soon as an international student starts working he needs to take out the Dutch basic health insurance.
