Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders

All NHTV programmes are accredited by NVAO. The Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO) was established by the Dutch and Flemish governments as an independent accreditation organisation tasked with providing an expert and objective assessment of the quality of higher education in Flanders and the Netherlands. Accreditation is a ‘formal and independent decision, indicating that an institution or programme meet certain predefined quality standards' (basis quality: quality which in international perspective can be reasonably expected of a bachelor’s or master’s higher education programme).

NVAO (in Dutch: Nederlands-Vlaamse Accreditatieorganisatie) is transparent towards society and all those involved in higher education and it respects the autonomy of institutions and their primary responsibility for the quality of the education they provide.

Main tasks of NVAO

The main tasks of NVAO are:

  • to assess and assure the quality of Dutch and Flemish higher education: to assure that the level and quality of education is up to standard and that this is recognisable by and transparent for society;
  • promoting a culture of quality and thus encouraging the improvement of the quality of higher education.

NVAO fulfils these tasks in an international perspective and in the context of the European Bologna process. For more information on NVAO or accreditation reports, please visit
