Erika Frey

ITMC 2001
Project Officer Volunteer Program Cordaid

Within the international development organization Cordaid in The Hague I am responsible for the active involvement of Dutch individuals and youth groups in structural poverty reduction alleviation. It is about arranging (virtual) encounters between committed citizens in the Netherlands and civil society organisations in developing countries. The aim of these (virtual) encounters is to exchange knowledge, experience and concrete, small-scale activities in which people from the North and South share their knowledge and skills with each other. The basic philosophy behind it is coming together to fight poverty.

ITMC challenged me to develop a critical mindset regarding issues such as cross cultural understanding, involvement and dialogue, participatory planning and sustainable development on local levels. Moreover ITMC motivated me in wanting to actively contribute to raising awareness and implementing strategies on a practical level for sustainable development issues on a global level. And to my own astonishment I am actually now doing this at Cordaid!

Vera Horevoorts

ITMC 1998
Research Manager Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority

I manage the Authority’s research department including budget and (junior) staff. I implement, review and develop strategic research initiatives which enable the Authority to gauge, monitor and respond to current and emerging visitation and tourism trends. I provide strategic advice to the CEO and senior management in the sustainable planning process of Australia’s premier tourism and leisure destinations: Darling Harbour and The Rocks.

The Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority is responsible for the commercial and public management of Australia’s most valuable and historically significant harbour foreshore promenades, including famous tourist destinations The Rocks and Darling Harbour.

ITMC was a good choice; not only because my current job has a great fit with the educational programme, but also because the actual courses I undertook at the NHTV were fun, interesting and challenging.

ITMC 2004
Director Albania Holidays Travel

After I came back from my NHTV studies in 2004 I started with the idea of offering online booking for the Albanian hotels, something which was missing at that time in Albania (see http://www.albania-holidays.com/).

Together with a friend we decided to work and specialize in incoming tourism because we believe in the tourism potential of our country Albania. We have a western education and know the mentality of western clients. Now we can say we are one of the best incoming travel companies in Albania targeting the upper-market clientele and collaborating. With some of the best travel companies in this field. In June 2008 we opened (together with two other business partners) our first boutique hotel in Tirana, Hotel Theranda (see http://www.therandahotel.com/).

There is no need to say that I would have start nothing without the NHTV education, to which I owe a lot of my success. An education with a perfect combination of professional content with wonderful teachers, and if you have clear ideas of your future in tourism, NHTV is the right trampoline to your success.

Leisure Sales Representative Singapore Airlines

As a sales representative of world's most-awarded airline every day is different. Most days are spent on the road visiting touroperating and MICE agents in The Netherlands and Belgium. The majority of these agents have specific agreements with Singapore Airlines, so therefore revenue numbers, market share and potential new sales are mainly topic of discussion. The aim is to try to improve sales, revenue and loyalty of the respective agents. Thereby new travel agents are approached to see whether there is an opportunity to start up a fruitful relationship.

During the year I attend a large number of trade fairs, such as Vakantiebeurs, and several workshops. Every year I also guide a group of travel agents on an educational tour to a specific destination in South-East Asia or South-West Pacific, this to familiarize them with the products and destinations that Singapore Airlines has to offer. This year, for example, I escorted a group of Belgium travel agents to Singapore and the State of Victoria in Australia.

I am very fortunate that my ITMC degree program provided me with a solid foundation of knowledge in the various tourism subjects, which I could use and explore during my four years in the professional field. Especially the Cross Cultural Studies supported me in a great way, as I concern this to be a very important and underestimated subject, working in the field of international tourism.

Bonnie van der Velde

ITMC 1998
Director of KS Media Publisher of visitor guides in Russia

I am the general director of KS Media, the publisher of In Your Pocket visitor guides in Russia. I am mainly responsible for the strategy and managing the international team which consists of 15 people.

ITMC helped me to be a good partner for our clients, it gave me a good understanding of the hospitality industry and the challenges the industry faces in a developing (or in popularity growing) destination.

After graduating from the NHTV I fulfilled my childhood dream and moved to St. Petersburg, Russia. I started working as a teacher at a secondary school, teaching cross cultural studies, tourism geography and English. Tourism as we knew it was new in Russia. I arrived right after the fall of communism and until that time only tourism organized by the state existed. St. Petersburg has an enormous potential as a destination, and therefore in 2003 my husband and I started a publishing company with the goal to publish the monthly visitor guide St. Petersburg In Your Pocket. The company is expanding and up from November 2008 Moscow In Your Pocket will see the light.

If you want to read the guide, go to www.inyourpocket.com – you can download the guide in PDF for free!
